Dry pet food and pet treats come in a wide variety of textures, ranging from crunchy and brittle to soft and chewy. These characteristics are not only important for palatability and pet enjoyment, but also for ensuring that the product is functionally suitable for its intended purpose—whether it’s a training reward, a daily kibble, or a dental aid. Texture analysis plays a critical role in product development, quality control, and consistency across production batches.

Our texture evaluation services support a broad range of dry pet food and treats, including kibble, dog biscuits, jerky strips, dental chews, soft training treats, meat sticks, and functional chews designed for calming, joint support, or oral health. We assess key texture attributes such as hardness, chewiness, brittleness, and fracturability using a texture analyzer fitted with probes and fixtures tailored to each product type. Testing methods include compression, penetration, bending, and shearing, generating force-deformation data that is used to calculate parameters like peak force, area under the curve, and break points.
These objective, repeatable measurements provide insight into the mechanical behavior of each product—enabling manufacturers to monitor consistency, refine formulations, and substantiate functional or marketing claims with data-driven evidence.
